The integration of computing and communication capabilities in modern energy infrastructure has made them vulnerable to cyber threats. Securing these systems involves unique challenges compared to information technology (IT) system security, since the interaction between cyber components and the physical controls that operate the plant needs to considered. Taking cognizance of these factors, the research community has begun to actively investigate cyber physical system (CPS)-security in the last five years. Yet, the research in this field is still at a developmental stage, and overall theories for securing CPSs have not yet emerged. In this panel session, leading researchers from this field will review the different research directions that have been pursued thus far, and share their opinion on the grand challenges that lie ahead.

Modernization of power grid systems has provided us a variety of benefits in terms of stable, efficient grid operations. However, at the same time, recent years there are a number of real cybersecurity threats targeting smart grid systems, such as the incident in Ukraine, in which the control center system was hacked and manipulated to disturb the electricity services. In this panel session, we invite industry experts from power industry as well as cyber security firms to share professional opinion about the emerging security threats against smart grid systems and further discusses the readiness of Singapore's critical infrastructure against such threats.
